An automatic washing machine won’t spin while water is still in the drum, so “won’t drain” and “won’t spin” are usually one problem. The usual causes (a clogged pump filter, a kinked or blocked drain hose, or too many suds) are all safe to check yourself. If it drains but still won’t spin, it’s usually an unbalanced load or a fault for a washing machine repair technician.
Why a washer won’t spin if it can’t drain
Before spinning, the machine checks the water level with a sensor. If the pump can’t empty the drum in time, the cycle stops with a drain code: 5E or 5C on Samsung, OE on LG.
Rinsing needs a drain and a refill too, so a machine that can’t drain won’t rinse either. If it stops because water isn’t coming in, you’ll see a fill code instead, such as 4E on Samsung or IE on LG.
Before you start: safety
- Unplug the machine and turn off the water tap before opening any cover.
- After a hot wash, let the water cool first.
- Have towels and a wide, shallow tray ready; there’s often more water than you expect.
Step-by-step: fixing a washer that won’t drain
1. Reset and run a drain-only cycle
Samsung suggests unplugging for 5 minutes to clear a temporary software glitch. Then run Drain/Spin on its own; if it drains with a normal pump sound, watch the next wash.
2. Check the drain hose
- Make sure the hose behind the machine isn’t kinked or crushed against the wall.
- Check the hose end isn’t blocked with lint and the sink or floor drain isn’t backing up.
- Mind the height and depth: Samsung’s guide says the hose should go 6–8 inches (about 15–20 cm) into the standpipe, at least 18 inches (about 46 cm) high. Figures vary by model, so check your manual.
- Avoid hose extensions where possible.
3. Clean the drain-pump filter
On front-loaders the filter sits behind a small panel at the bottom front. Samsung advises having a towel and a big enough container ready.
- Open the panel, pull out the small emergency drain hose if fitted, and uncap it over the tray. Re-cap it whenever the tray fills.
- When the water stops, unscrew the filter slowly anticlockwise over the towel.
- Remove lint, coins, hair clips, buttons or small socks.
- Rinse the filter; if anything is stuck in front of the pump impeller, remove it carefully by hand.
- Refit the filter and tighten it clockwise, because a loose filter leaks.
- Run a rinse-and-spin and watch the filter area.
4. Cut back on detergent
Heavy suds slow draining, and Samsung lists detergent and softener build-up as a cause of clogs. Dose by load size and use a low-suds powder made for automatic machines.
5. Level the machine
Samsung notes that an unlevel machine can drain poorly. Use a spirit level and adjust the feet until it doesn’t rock.
Cleaned the filter and hose but the code keeps coming back? Photograph the display and the model label and send them to Ali at Mousa Workshop on WhatsApp with your location, or call +966 54 372 8453 to book a diagnosis.
It drains but won’t spin: balance and shipping bolts
- Unbalanced load: one heavy item, such as a blanket or bath mat, bunches up and triggers
UEorUb, cancelling or slowing the spin. LG suggests adding one or two similar items. - Shipping bolts: a new machine’s transit bolts must come out before first use, or it will shake violently.
- Feet and floor: uneven feet or a soft or slippery floor make vibration worse.
Noise during the spin
Coins or zips in the drum, bolts left in or an unbalanced load are the simple causes. A roar that rises with speed can mean worn drum bearings, and repeated banging worn shock absorbers; both need a technician.
What about twin-tub machines?
Twin-tubs usually drain by gravity through a valve worked by the drain knob, so check the knob is on Drain and the hose is clear, with its end lower than the machine. If the spin tub won’t turn, shut its lid and spread the clothes evenly. Beyond that, suspect the lid switch, motor or capacitor: a technician job, as the capacitor can hold a charge even when unplugged.
Samsung vs LG error codes: same code, different meaning
Important: never read a code using another brand’s meaning. On Samsung, OE means overflow (too much water); on LG, it means the machine can’t drain. On Samsung, LE means a leak or moisture was detected; on LG, it means the motor is overloaded or locked.
| Code | Samsung | LG | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
5C / 5E |
Not draining, or draining slowly | — | Filter, hose and detergent steps above |
OE |
Overflow (OC also possible) |
Can’t drain | LG: drain steps above. Samsung: unplug and call a technician |
LE |
Leak or moisture detected (LC also possible) |
Motor overloaded or locked | Samsung: unplug and find the water. LG: rest 30 minutes to cool, then restart |
UE / Ub |
Unbalanced load | Unbalanced load | Redistribute the laundry or add similar items |
dE |
Door not closed or locked (also dC, dS) |
Door won’t lock | Close the door firmly and clear trapped fabric; if it persists, call a technician |
4E / IE |
4C/4E: water not filling |
IE: not enough water supply |
Open the tap fully and check the inlet hose |
Sud |
Too many suds; pauses until they settle | — | Wait, then use less detergent |
A dash means the brand doesn’t use that code this way. Codes vary by model, so check your manual.
When it’s the pump, motor, belt or door lock
These faults mean opening the machine and handling electrical parts, so they’re for a technician:
- Drain pump: the filter and hose are clear, but the pump hums without moving water, or is silent.
- Motor and carbon brushes: brushes wear down in conventional motors. Many direct-drive (inverter) motors have none and report faults as codes, such as
LEon LG or3Eon Samsung. - Belt: on belt-driven machines, the motor runs but the drum doesn’t turn if the belt has snapped or slipped.
- Door lock: if the door won’t lock, nothing starts.
- Water-level sensor or board: a faulty sensor can “think” water is still inside and block the spin.
Prevention: a monthly routine
- Drum clean: Samsung recommends Self Clean at least monthly, with a reminder after about 40 washes on front-loaders. On LG, run Tub Clean when
tCLappears. - Pump filter: at least monthly or about every 40 washes, whichever comes first (Samsung); at least monthly (LG).
- Door and drawer: leave both open after use and wipe the seal dry, especially in coastal Saihat and Qatif, where humidity runs high at night and early morning.
- Pockets: empty them, and wash small items in a mesh bag.
When to call a technician
- The drain code returns after you’ve cleaned the filter and hose and cut the detergent.
- The pump hums without moving water, or is silent.
- A burning smell or a tripping breaker.
- Loud roaring or banging during the spin with a balanced load.
- Water under the machine from an unknown source.
- The door won’t lock, or won’t open after draining.
At Mousa Workshop, Ali checks the machine first and tells you the cost before starting any repair. We cover Saihat, Anak, Qatif, Tarout, Dammam and Khobar daily from 8 AM to 11 PM. Book washing machine repair on WhatsApp with a photo of the code and your model number.

Frequently asked questions
How do I open a front-loader door when it's full of water?
Don't force it: the lock stays engaged for safety while there's water in the drum. Drain it first through the emergency hose behind the filter panel, then wait a few minutes for the lock to release. If it stays locked after draining, the lock itself may be faulty.
Do all washing machines have a pump filter I can clean?
No. Samsung notes that pump-filter cleaning applies to front-loaders, and many top-loaders have no filter the user can reach. On those, check the drain hose and call a technician if the problem continues.
What does CL mean on an LG washer?
It's the child-lock indicator, not a fault, and it means the control panel is locked. Unlock it as your model's manual describes, usually by holding a specific button for a few seconds.
What should I send the technician before a visit?
Send the brand and model number from the label (usually inside the door frame or on the back), a photo of the code, and a short description such as 'stopped at rinse with water left in'. It helps the technician anticipate the fault, and at Mousa Workshop you get the cost after diagnosis, before any work starts.
