How Often Should You Clean Your AC in the Eastern Province?

In the Eastern Province, clean your split AC’s filters every two weeks during the cooling season and book a professional AC deep clean at least once a year before summer, plus a second one after the dust season if you live near the coast or run the AC all year. Here’s one schedule built on advice from the Saudi Electricity Company (SEC), the Saudi Energy Efficiency Center (SEEC) and manufacturers, plus safe DIY filter steps.

Why ACs get dirty faster in the Eastern Province

ACs in Saihat, Qatif and Dammam run long hours against three problems:

• Dust: the hot, dusty summer shamal typically blows from late May to mid-August, clogging filters and coating the outdoor unit’s fins.
• Coastal humidity: areas near the sea are much more humid at night and early morning, so more water condenses on the coil and dust sticks to it.
• Salt: sea air leaves salt deposits on the outdoor condenser fins, speeding up corrosion.

The result is a clogged filter, a coil that transfers heat poorly and an AC that runs longer to cool less. That shows on your bill: SEC says air conditioning accounts for more than 60% of household electricity use.

How often should you clean the AC filter?

Every two weeks during the cooling season. That’s the advice from SEC and SEEC, and from Daikin and LG. Gree’s user manual says every three months, but more often in dusty conditions.

There’s no real conflict: three months is a ceiling for normal conditions, and the manual makes an exception for dust. Eastern Province summers are dusty, so stick to two weeks through the season. In milder months you can space cleans out, but never beyond your manual’s interval.

AC cleaning schedule for the Eastern Province

Best timing for a deep clean: in spring, before the heat builds and the shamal starts in late May, and again once it eases in the second half of August or in September. SEC recommends servicing your AC at least once a year.

Outdoor units in coastal homes

In Saihat, Tarout, Darin and Ras Tanura, the outdoor unit faces dust, humidity and salt at once:

• Shade it if you can without blocking its airflow, as SEC also recommends.
• Don’t squeeze it into a light well or narrow space; SEEC advises against installing ACs there.
• Leave the wash to a technician. If you rinse it yourself, switch off the breaker first and use fresh water at low pressure, as high pressure bends the delicate fins.
• If you spot rust on the casing or corroded fins, have them checked at the next visit.

How to clean a split AC filter yourself

1. Cut the power: switch off with the remote, then at the breaker or plug.
2. Open the front panel: lift it gently from both sides until it stays open.
3. Remove the filters: slide them out of their guides without bending them.
4. Remove loose dust: tap it off or vacuum the dirty side.
5. Rinse with lukewarm (never hot) water from the back, so the dust leaves the way it came in. For greasy filters, common near kitchens, add a little mild detergent and use a soft brush, never harsh solvents.
6. Dry in the shade: direct sun can warp the plastic.
7. Refit, close the panel and restore the power.

Avoid:

• Running the AC without filters, even briefly: dust goes straight onto the coil.
• Spraying water or cleaner inside the indoor unit, where the control board sits.
• Opening the outdoor unit: its capacitors hold a charge even with the power off, and the fan can move.
• Climbing to a high unit without a stable ladder and a helper.

What a professional AC cleaning should include

A deep clean reaches parts you can’t safely clean yourself. ENERGY STAR’s professional maintenance checklist includes:

• Checking the refrigerant charge.
• Cleaning the indoor evaporator coil and the outdoor condenser coil.
• Cleaning and adjusting the blower.
• Tightening electrical connections and measuring voltage and current.
• Inspecting the condensate drain.
• Checking the thermostat and controls.

Signs your AC is overdue for a clean

• Weaker airflow or cooling than usual, even with a clean filter.
• A damp or musty smell at start-up.

What to do after a dust storm

Summer dust storms can fill a filter in days, so don’t wait for the usual date:

• Keep windows and doors tightly shut during the storm; dust that gets in ends up in the filter.
• Check the filter straight afterwards and clean it if it’s full.
• Clear any bags or leaves caught around the outdoor unit.
• If cooling drops despite a clean filter, the condenser fins may be clogged and need washing.

Why does my AC smell musty?

During cooling, the indoor coil is cold and wet. Add dust and darkness, and mould and bacteria thrive in the drain tray and on the blower wheel, sooner in humid coastal homes.

• Clean the filter and refit it only when fully dry.
• Check the drain, since standing water in the tray is a common source of odour.
• Skip the air freshener: it masks the smell without removing the cause.
• The real fix is washing the coil, blower, drain tray and drain pipe.

A burning or hot-plastic smell is different: switch off at the breaker straight away and call a technician, as it could be a failing capacitor or a burnt connection.

When to call a technician

• It’s been a year since the last deep clean, or summer is coming.
• The dust season is over and you live near the sea or run the AC year-round.
• The smell or dripping continues after cleaning the filter.
• You see ice on the pipes, smell burning or hear unusual humming.
• The outdoor unit is high up or hard to reach safely.
